And by the way:

About this store…

(From a framed text, right by the cash register… In the front…)

In a building believed moved from East Rupert, by owners thought to be Norman Blackmer and Harvey Holley, it was one of the early retail stores in the area, established around 1816. Records are sketchy but for several years it was known as the Dorset Union Store, operating like a co-op with members owning shares. It was associated with the New England Protective Union, which offered uniform bookkeeping and inventorying. In 1839, the store was bought by Moore Holley & Co., a six-man partnership. It then took on several identities including S. F. Holley & Co. and Holley & Gray Co. According to documents found in the store attic, in 1845 the store was known as Underhill & Gray and in 1847 it was known as Clark Gray.

In 1851, its name again became the Dorset Union Store. In 1894, Gilbert Sykes made space for a library above the store and Henry Baldwin, who lived in adjacent quarters became librarian until 1903. Sykes kept the library above the store until 1913 and his daughter, Louise, was acting librarian until 1905 at which point Miss Hattie Gray took the job.

During World War I, John J. McBride, a 28 year old native of Dorset, enlisted in “the war to end all wars”. He lost his life in 1918 and McBride’s name was immortalized when fifteen veterans of the war met in a room above the store in January, 1930 to organize an American Legion Post.

In 1926, Perry M. Peltier and Kimball O. Tifft entered into a partnership in the operation of Peltier & Tifft general store. The relationship lasted until 1955, when Tifft sold his half of the business and Peltier retained ownership of the building. In 1977, Perry Peltier, age 81 sold his venerable general store “Peltier’s” to Jay and Terri Hathaway, and decided to retire. The Hathaways owned and operated the store and raised their family in the living quarters upstairs for 27 years. They sold the store in 2004 to John Rushing and Ellen Stimson. In July, 2007, Cindy Loudenslager and Gretchen Schmidt purchased the store and returned it to its original name—Dorset Union Store.

This information is thanks to Tyler Resch, the author of the book “DORSET, in the shadow of the marble mountain”, 1989.

In performance, this happens in a sequential, diachronic way, but with parameters we can cover.

The reason for which multilingual pieces work in performance but not on page—and thus how the textual construction must take into account these phenomena and find solutions: yes solutions, to them for the reading experience:

1/can’t skip when someone is doing the performance. Either you leave, or you go through it. In reading, you actually can a/choose to skip completely or b/skip to understandable stuff

(

( 2/in performance, the inflection of the tone, the rhythm etc. are controlled by performer and can work in different ways. No way to ascertain this here (although you can put ‘directions’ in English. Stage directions… reading directions… turn it into a… play haha…)

3/in performance, there is a very physical presence. Performer can keep people interested physically and visually. The physicality, and the visuality, are there. And can be engaging. Independently of the words…

(

( 4/audiences have habit of ‘auditory’ multilinguality with culture, and in everyday lives. With pop culture, pop music, even with opera. But not in language and reading and books.

Actions:

1/ put directions for long

multillingual sections

2/ break multilinguality with episodes in language often enough that no one skips—or if they skip, it’s not too much

3/ put in the theory unfolding: the theory within the text

4/discover and use operations specific to platform. In fact, choose platform based on operations it can facilitate. (This is actually why we go to platform that allows different reading experience and operations to work through that form. NOT an accident that the text is here. Not an accident!

5/ make some of the multilinguality more accessible

6/create a different reading experience—namely, the raed!

—And there was a tree, a big-trunked tree, fallen, leaning against another, another tall tree, but much leaner. Now curbed.

It was on what’s called Dorset West Rd. close to where we were staying.

This big big tree, fallen, leaning against this little one…

—No me diga…

—Si… And…

… It’s true, and…

… Every day, I stopped…

Every day…

Every day, every time I rode,

I stopped and looked at the big fallen tree, standing, still,

leaning against the small tree, curbed—

the two trees,

leaning against the sky,

leaning against the clouds,

standing still,

in a field of long tall trees.

I kept wondering, Will the fallen tree’s momentum be too strong and, over time, soon maybe, push down, both down, falling, fallen, along with the leaning tree?

Will the smaller tree ultimately save itself, somehow, step to the outside in the ways trees might (they’re pretty resilient), and let the big one fall and kind of be like, Well, dude, I kept you up as long as I could…

Or, maybe, this strange equilibrium will last?

Forever?

They will stand, the two of them, falling and leaning, one against the other, forever, against the sky.

An internationally acclaimed writer and a pioneering plurilingual poet and newformist, Amir Parsa is the author of more than twenty literary works, including Kobolierrot, Feu L’encre/Fable, Erre, and Drive-by Cannibalism in the Baroque Tradition. An uncategorizable body of work, his literary œuvre—written directly in English, French, Farsi, Spanish and various hybrids—constitutes a radical polyphonic enterprise that puts into question national, cultural and aesthetic attachments while fashioning innovative genres, discursive endeavors and types of literary artifacts.

Parsa’s curatorial interjections, performances, conceptual pieces and subversions, along with photographic, participatory and exhibition-based projects have taken place in a host of galleries, public spaces and environments all over the world. Overall and through the years, his books, transgressive literary works, artistic fusions and neo-disciplinary interventions and disruptions have dazzled and bedeviled, enchanted and pissed off, drawn praise and scorn, and punctured many an emperor’s balloons.

Born in Tehran, Amir attended French international schools in Iran and the U.S., studied at Princeton and Columbia, currently lives in Harlem, N.Y.C. and teaches and directs interdisciplinary studies at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

This is a first publication of bykryd||dorset. Big thanks to the Marble House Project, and the Marble House residency, where the piece was unexpectedly conceived, first written, and later developed some more.)
